Forming a LGBT-friendly discourse, enabling NGO‘s to advocate and defend discriminated persons

Lithuanian society is still very intolerant towards LGBT+ people. The prevailing negative discourse prevents countering homophobic bullying in schools, teachers lack skills and determination to deal with the cases of discrimination towards LGBT+ persons, and the LGBT+ friendly environment is barely visible in public discourse.

Moreover, legal regulation, institutional practices are not LGBT-friendly, NGOs do not possess sufficient legal capabilities to represent effectively the interets of LGBT+. Therefore Tolerant Youth Association has launched the Project “Promoting Friendly Society by strengthening the Role of NGO‘s“, which aims at decreasing the discrimination of LGBT+ people by inducing LGBTpositive discourse and strengthening NGO‘s. The objectives are: forming a LGBTfriendly discourse; enabling NGO‘s to advocate and defend discriminated persons. Activities implemented will result in a campain for positive and LGBTfriendly public discourse, a campaign against bullying in schools, improving competences of teachers to deal with bullying, identifying the legal obstacles for LGBT+ rights protection and NGO activity, proposing their solutions, influencing legislation and decision making procedures and creating models of effective ensurance of equal possibilities of LGBT+ people.

The duration of the Project – October 2013 – December 2014. The Project “Promoting Friendly Society by strengthening the Role of NGO‘s“, (No. EEE-NVO-K1-DP-26)  is being implemented according to NGO Programme Lithuania of the European Economic Area Financial Mechanism (EEA Grants) 2009-2014
